The Best Animated Feature Film – Oscar Winner 2021 – Soul
Soul premiered on one of the OTT platforms. The movie is about reincarnation, death, life, and all the mystical experiences in between. A music teacher Joe is struggling to get his break when he ends up in the ‘Great Before’, where his life’s purpose is questioned. With immaculate detail, enchanting music, a gripping narrative, and celestial creatures, the movie drives across the concept of savoring the present moment. The Soul is about Joe, a middle-aged school music teacher who aspires to evolve into a performing artist which, he believes is his calling.
This is probably one of their most risky, experimental bets in terms of plot, animation, and even its music, mixing jazz tunes with minimalist electronic music. “Soul” is much more focused on the adult audience. It could still be enjoyed by children and people of all ages, and it has its moments of levity and humorous gags but make no mistake, this one is a bit tad unique. The message at the core of this film is that it’s perfectly fine not to have life figured out, as long as you keep trying to live it to the fullest. This theme – is more vital now than ever before.
Soul’s beautiful rendering of the East’s core spiritual beliefs through a funny, yet relatable drama made for great watching. The psychedelic sailors, the tribute to African American jazz tradition, and a soft knock on the collective heads of wall-street brokers make Soul a must-watch in post-pandemic 2021.
