2nd May: World Tuna Day
It is a global call to keep tuna fishing at sustainable levels. Every 2 May is World Tuna Day, which should serve as more motivation to highlight the importance of these fish to the marine ecosystem—and the global economy. Tuna, after all, is one of the healthiest foods in the world. It is a great source of selenium, vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and protein. It also provides Vitamin D and phosphorus. As a result of the amazing qualities of tuna, the fish are threatened by an overwhelming demand.
Tuna and tuna-like species are very important economically — to both developed and developing countries — and a significant source of food. They include approximately 40 species occurring in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and in the Mediterranean Sea.
World Tuna Day aims to spread information about the possible impact of drastically declining tuna stocks and to highlight the economic and social benefits of establishing more sustainable fishing practices.
