‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’ Hilarious Tale of Family Dysfunction | Review

The Mitchells vs. The Machines Animation studio in India

The Mitchells vs. the Machines – a hilarious animated comedy about a dysfunctional family that goes beyond its concept.

Synopsis

The creators of The Mitchells vs. the Machines managed to do the impossible. They took one of the most notorious modern-day problems, combined it with a seemingly trivial story, and managed to create an original and hilarious animated movie!

At first sight, the Mitchells look like a perfectly exaggerated dysfunctional family. But once you take a closer look, the problem of disconnection and being absorbed by gadgets or the storyline of father and daughter growing apart starts to look disturbingly relatable for most urban families today.

Katie Vs Dick Mitchell

Katie and Dick Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson and Danny McBride) represent the classic “Parents vs. Children” conflict remastered through modern reality. Katie is a talented artist who entered film school in California and is excited about the digital technologies of the future. Her father, otherwise, is incredibly old-school, rejects technology, and preaches outdoor activities.

Main Storyline

The main storyline and the central conflict emerge when a rise of matches begins while the whole family decides to take a “bonding” cross-country road trip. Despite being cartoonishly exaggerated, the Mitchells start behaving like pretty relatable emotional characters in front of the perspective of being the only ones who can save the world. Setting an example, they put away their dysfunctional chase for artificial perfection and embrace their actual values, solid sides, and personalities.

Upcoming Anime Sequels Confirmed for 2021

There is a vital emotional component in the story expressed through a teenage daughter and a middle-aged father who never seem to find common ground, a mother (Maya Rudolph) who is trying to make peace in the middle of the perfect storm, and the youngest son who seems to be the only ultimate victim of the warfare. However, in the face of disaster, the Mitchells manage to emulate a perfectly functioning organism without the need to change or force the course of the event. Their transformation as a family happens naturally without the character’s violation.

This seemingly dramatic and even tragic course of events is expressed through lively and lightweight humor that makes the overall concept acceptable for all ages.

Animation Foundation: Drawing Cartoon Characters
Phil Lord & Christopher Miller pull Animation to the next level

Putting a character who is also a filmmaker into the central position, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller take the animation to the next level. They set the concept free, experiment with 2D and 3D animation, and allow the main protagonist to create the video sequence herself. Unlike most animated movies we have seen recently, the Mitchells vs. the Machines looks like a daring experiment that cannot be pinned down to a particular studio. Remember how you could quickly tell which studio has created the character from the features, color pattern, or signature moves? The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a whole different story. Like in any good comedy, the story operates through the principle that you don’t know what to expect next. And even if it seems to you that you have already understood the course of events and the outcomes, the character’s reaction, behavior, and course of events will fail your expectations most hilariously.

While most critics and viewers talk about the movie’s original and untrivial way of playing with the notorious “dysfunctional family” theme, the story goes deeper than one of the trendiest concepts in today’s storytelling.

Pros And Cons of Movie

The Michaels vs. the Machines talk about art, its proper role in modern society, and perspectives in the future. The movie speculates about creativity and how it will never die out even in the most digitally organized and pragmatic community. Once again, the story rolls around different ways to use the technology and the ability to look out of the box even if the course of events seems predetermined by the most accurate algorithms.

Another exciting thing about the Mitchells vs. the Machines is that they don’t touch such topics as social media or any particular digital platforms. Although YouTube does appear in the story, the authors don’t focus on grinding on the influence of the specific trendy digital matters, their pros, and cons. They manage to talk about technology and its perspectives in general without pointing the finger at a particular concept.

Message from ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ Movie

The whole idea of the movie is that the technology won’t go anyway as well as the traditional family values, outdoor activities, and the need to overcome the notorious emotional gap between generations. The movie highlights that today’s society stands at one of the most exciting development milestones when we shall learn to integrate the future concept into the eternal values and determine future generations’ lives.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines manage to balance between family drama, sci-fi speculation, and a comedy. This way, they tend to hit their primary goal and draw the attention of all modern family members, letting them think about the actual values and the core of their relationship. Not that dysfunctional, after all.

10 Top Sci-Fi and Fantasy Shows on Netflix You Should Binge Today 2d animation company in India

Although Netflix offers an endless amount of various movies, series, and documentaries, finding a good and genuinely engaging one seems only to get more challenging as the variety of choices grows.

If you are in the mood to watch something that will take you away from your everyday routine and introduce you to whole new universes, the Sci-fi and Fantasy series is precisely what you are looking for.

Upcoming Anime Sequels Confirmed for 2021

In this article, we collected ten top-rated Sci-fi and Fantasy series you may find on Netflix today. Our chart has it all – superheroes, magic, scientific discoveries, and a bizarre world. So, grab your popcorn and dive in!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

This fantasy series will fascinate both those obsessed with the saga after seeing the original movie back in the 80s and those who know the story for the first time.

Embodied through the astonishingly talented art of puppeteers, this series takes you back to the undiscovered universe of elf-like Gelflings overcoming their tribal differences to escape from the oppressive rule of the villainous and reptilian Skeksis.

Ten episodes of The Dark Chrystal: Age of Resistance is only the beginning of the timeless saga. While you anticipate the following story, check out the “behind the scenes” documentary on Netflix.

Upcoming Animation Move in 2021 – Don’t Miss It

Love, Death, and Robots

Coming from the creator of Deadpool – Tim Miller, Love, Death, and Robots is a collection of various sci-fi novellas created by different directors and storytellers. They are united with the familiar sensation of uncertainness of technological progress and its social perspectives.

Love, Death, and Robots go from incredibly violent and destructive scenes to lightweight romance and quirky humor, absorbing the viewer. Eventually, you don’t see several separate stories but start to embrace the whole concept and its message.

Stranger Things

Although we are almost sure that you have seen or at least heard of Stranger Things, we could not avoid this brilliant sci-fi horror-ish Netflix series on our list.

Being one of the trendy tributes to the 80’s aesthetics, Stranger Things is created according to the legendary aesthetics and atmosphere of Stephen King’s novel.

A governmental conspiracy, stunning special effects, and vividly unforgettable characters performed by talented actors, including Wynona Ryder – all those are Stranger Things. Add to this the soundtrack that embodies the atmosphere of Hollywood’s golden horror classics, and you will get one of the most memorable series Netflix has to offer today!

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia

This series will be equally fun and engaging both for sci-fi enthusiasts and fans of DreamWorks animation.

This tells us the story of a boy who finds a magical amulet that turns him into a troll hunter and discovers a secret world of beasts living in shadows. This Netflix series takes us all back into childhood and that magical atmosphere of Saturday morning cartoons.

The 100

This post-apocalyptic series may only seem like another teenage saga initially. Still, throughout its plot, The 100 raises truly complicated questions about human nature and the choices we make in life.

Meant to be a bunch of guinea pigs that were supposed whether Earth is livable again after a global catastrophe, the heroes of the 100 soon enough discover themselves in the middle of a perfect storm of politics, intrigues, conspiracy, and ethical dilemma.

Snowpiercer

Another post-apocalyptic series is an advanced interpretation of the self-titled movie. When global climate change forces the Earth to freeze, one genius engineer comes up with the idea of building an eternal engine.

The concept is embodied in a massive 1000-cart train, where law and order are built according to strict social gradation between passengers that belong to different classes.

Snowpiecer is a series about technology and overcoming, the power of human intelligence, and human nature’s weakness. It is a sci-fi, romantic story, and deep social analysis simultaneously, which makes it equally engaging for viewers of different tastes.

3 REASONS WHY CHARACTER-BASED ANIMATION VIDEOS ARE POPULAR

The Flash

Those who want to dive into the world of classic superheroes and appreciate the genuine sci-fi fascination will enjoy The Flash.

This series embodies everything we love so much about CW’s superhero shows, their atmosphere, plots, and hooks. However, due to the charming cast and stunning storytelling, The Flash appears perfectly acceptable and engaging even for those who don’t consider themselves comic book fans.

The Umbrella Academy

When we talk about superhero universes, the stories of “how it all has started” are consistently among the most engaging ones.

However, while The Umbrella Academy collects numerous recognizable comic book heroes at a young age, it is still not another superhero sci-fi series. Some even call it an antidote against all the typical comic book stereotypes ground again and again in the sci-fi genre.

It has a unique atmosphere, genuine storytelling, and special effects that make it to a new level of engagement even for those who have never been fascinated with superpowers and traditionally orphaned children that embrace them.

The Witcher

On the one hand, the Witcher is a long-time anticipated screening of the legendary fantasy book. But at the same time, the series managed to keep itself away from the traditional arrogance of Games of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. Otherwise, the Witcher does not seem to take itself too seriously, filled with numerous jokes and irony.

Netflix viewers seem to love and hate The Witcher almost equally for its original reading of the classic story and approach to the genre. But no one managed to stay indifferent.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Talking about the Sci-fi series on Netflix, we simply could not ignore the genre’s classics. Star-Trek: The Next Generation combines everything we love so much about the franchise and adds this magical 80’s atmosphere to it.

Captivating plots, iconic characters presented by legendary actors, and the idea of exploring other planets and universes, Star Track: Next Generation seems to take us back in our childhood while being as relevant today as it might have ever been before.

The Best Animated Short Film – 2021 Oscar Winner – “If Anything Happens I Love You”

If Anything Happens I Love You 2d animation company in india

The Netflix animated movie “If Anything Happens I Love You” not only tugs at your heartstrings but also shares an important message. The movie is the portrayal of two parents coping with the loss of their daughter. The reverse chronological sequence of events reveals at the end of the film, that the daughter was killed at a school shooting incident, highlighting the pressing issue of gun violence prevalent in America.

We find out that the title If Anything Happens I Love You, was the daughter’s last words to her parents, as she sends them the message on her phone minutes before gunshots are heard in the background.

The silent film effectively captures the characters’ emotions, but what moves the audience besides the touching story, are the minimalistic visuals where the characters’ shadows are used in place of dialogue.

The animator opts for a simple watercolor background to give the short a rustic and raw feel. The only colors used are blue, to signify the daughter, and the American flag, which carries a heavy message about the ubiquity of this issue in the country.

The writer and director of the film, Michael Govier and Will McCormack consulted with Everyone for Gun Safety, an American non-profit organization that advocates against gun violence while developing the script

With its striking message, If Anything Happens I Love You is being considered as a front-runner for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film along with Canvas and Cops and Robbers.

If Anything Happens I Love You is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Best Animated Feature Film – Oscar Winner 2021 – Soul

Soul Best Animated Feature Film

Soul premiered on one of the OTT platforms. The movie is about reincarnation, death, life, and all the mystical experiences in between. A music teacher Joe is struggling to get his break when he ends up in the ‘Great Before’, where his life’s purpose is questioned. With immaculate detail, enchanting music, a gripping narrative, and celestial creatures, the movie drives across the concept of savoring the present moment. The Soul is about Joe, a middle-aged school music teacher who aspires to evolve into a performing artist which, he believes is his calling.

This is probably one of their most risky, experimental bets in terms of plot, animation, and even its music, mixing jazz tunes with minimalist electronic music. “Soul” is much more focused on the adult audience. It could still be enjoyed by children and people of all ages, and it has its moments of levity and humorous gags but make no mistake, this one is a bit tad unique. The message at the core of this film is that it’s perfectly fine not to have life figured out, as long as you keep trying to live it to the fullest. This theme – is more vital now than ever before.

Soul’s beautiful rendering of the East’s core spiritual beliefs through a funny, yet relatable drama made for great watching. The psychedelic sailors, the tribute to African American jazz tradition, and a soft knock on the collective heads of wall-street brokers make Soul a must-watch in post-pandemic 2021.

Tom and Jerry 1992 vs. 2021 Comparison between the original cartoon and live-action film

Tom and Jerry 1992 vs. 2021 Comparison between the original cartoon and live-action film best 2d animation studio in india

Tom and Jerry is a classic animation franchise, an ultimate signature move of the Hann-Barbara Studios, and the most beloved cartoon of several generations. In 2021 we get a chance to see the ultimate reincarnation of the iconic animated characters in a new action film. Creators of this new version promise to keep the main spirit and atmosphere of the world-famous franchise, enrich it with modern animation solutions, and place the habitual characters in territories that have never been available to them before – live action.

How much has changed?

In fact, not so much had changed since the 1940s, when William Hannah and Joseph Barbera created Tom and Jerry, until the latest featured movie, Tom and Jerry: The Movie Flopped was released in 1992. Altogether, the world-famous Cat and Mouse has earned duo 7 Academy Awards for the best animated short film and become a truly iconic animated character. The animation world knows several attempts to repeat their success by copying the original animation’s plot and comic action. Still, only the original Tom and Jerry were indeed written into history books of animation.

No wonder the release of the new version of the franchise with innovative solutions and the modern vision of classic characters seemed pretty controversial today. On the one hand, critics anticipate the new image of the beloved characters enhanced by modern technologies. But at the same time, there is a lot of concern about whether this classic franchise should be placed in current conditions and whether this transformation will go naturally.

Tom and Jerry’s placement in the live-action movie is seen to be the main contraversion, but it is not as innovative a move as some of us may think. In 1988, we already saw “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” – a live-action movie, where cartoon characters existed in the same dimension with live actors and scenery. Later on, “Space Jam”, which was released in 1996, proved that the idea of a combination between classic animation and live-action is a demanded genre among viewers. By the way, “Space Jam” also gets its modernized sequel in the summer of 2021.

So what is so special about the Tom and Jerry live-action movie that raises so much contraversion and concern today?

What has really changed?

The first fundamental change that you may notice in the 2021 version of Tom and Jerry is that today the cat and the mouse are not the main protagonists in the plot. They act more like a team contrasted with a live-action character who represents a pretty stereotypical millennial character. She is the one who will change her journey hand in hand with classic animation characters. Critics’ primary concern about this plot move is that neither the audience that remembers the original Tom and Jerry animation nor the new young viewers may find the story and its development relatable.

By the way, the characters are not that classic also. For the first time in history, Tom and Jerry get new 3D looks, which are supposed to help them fit the real-life scenery. According to the plot, the new movie will not be a sequence of live-action scenes and fully animated episodes like it was, for example, in the “SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water” released in 2021. The 2021 Tom and Jerry get fully integrated into live-action scenery; therefore, transferring them into 3D animation looks like the best solution. However, the creators decided not to go too deep into anatomical and realistic detailing. Thus Tom and Jerry will preserve most of the looks and anatomies of their classic embodiments, making the atmosphere of the new action movie similar to the one of the “Roger Rabbit” film that we have already mentioned.

Some things remain unchanged

The new movie creators claim that although they are eager to discover new dimensions of the classic animated characters through new technologies and solutions, they still treat the classic franchise’s framework and concept with great respect, doing their best to preserve the very atmosphere of the beloved cartoon.

Even though the 2021 version will introduce numerous new characters that have never appeared in the franchise before, we shall witness some classic, familiar images. The 2021 movie didn’t leave behind such iconic figures like Spike – the vicious bulldog and Butch – the alley cat.

However, the main concern was whether the creators would give voices to the originally mute characters. This time the solution looks pretty elegant as the live-action heroes carry on all the dialogues, so the viewer does not even pay attention to the fact that the animated characters remain mute. Tom does have several lines, but the creators managed to preserve the original franchise’s authenticity by using Tom’s voice fragments from the original animation. By the way, those lines were performed by William Hannah himself. The creators of the 2021 movie also picked up the classic “Angel-Devil” move for Tom, voiced by Lil Rel Howery. Moreover, Tom has a brief singing episode performed by T-Pain.

Spike and Butch do talk in the movie, which corresponds to the original franchise as those characters have never been mute in the classic Hannah-Barbers version. Spike had several episodes when he told off Tom for his misbehaviors and tutored his son – a bulldog puppy Tyke. Butch had several episodes where he was educating Tom and other characters about the romance of stray life. Therefore, those characters’ dialogue doesn’t look unnatural even for the original Tom and Jerry franchise’s ultimate fans.

All in all, we may say that although there is a lot of concern and argument about the new Tom and Jerry live-action film, the creators took the original franchise with great respect and put a lot of effort into preserving the iconic atmosphere and signature moves of the beloved animated characters. Naturally, true appreciators of Hannah-Barbera animation will remain pretty reluctant towards the innovative approach to the classics. Still, critics forecast that the 2021 movie may become an ultimate reincarnation of Tom and Jerry to discover them for the younger auditorium.

SYNOPSIS: In this animated musical, a girl builds a rocket ship and blasts off, hoping to meet a mythical moon goddess.

When Raya was a child, her father spoke about Benja at a time when the various tribes were one, and everyone lived in peace. That was nearly 500 years ago, and now each tribe, selfish in its own way, doesn’t trust the other, and the idea of being one is a child’s dream. Yet, Chief Benja of the Heart tribe, believes one day, everyone can come together, and what was once known as Kumandra could return.

However, thanks to the Fang tribe, what peace there once was gets broken, and so comes what is known as the drunes. Now, what are they? They are toxic entities that, when they touch any living being, turn them to stone. They are considered the opposite of dragons, of which there was once plenty, who brought to Raya’s world life.

So, 6 years after the Fang tribe’s betrayal and the rise of the drunes, Raya is trying to piece together a gem, the heart of their world, hoping it may bring her father back from stone and reset the world to what it once was.
